vegaspades 's review for:
Men Who Hate Women
by Laura Bates
Excellent if difficult read. I would characterize its main conclusion as 'traditional ideas of masculinity alienate men who fail to live up to them and make them vulnerable to radicalization by woman-hating fringe groups, and those groups do material harm'; I'm kind of disappointed that the book does not engage with the fact that it is men who created and enforce those traditional ideas under the patriarchy, thus resulting in a 'it hurt itself in its confusion' situation.
There's certainly a discussion to be had on whose responsibility it is to dismantle systems of patriarchy, and a large divide might be if men can be trusted to give up the system that keeps them in power.
