Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

Wow. Humans can survive so much. The WWII guys suffered incredibly. This biography was well written. I was riveted even through the seemingly un-survivable events. I learned a lot (one thing: more airmen died due to mechanical failure not attacks) and was constantly in awe that people *did* survive. Perhaps the biggest thing I noticed was the lack of a victim mindset. Even in a "death camp" where the guards did their best to dehumanize the POWs, there was a culture of empowerment instead of victimhood.  Read or listen to this book. Assign it to your teens.
