MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey.
This book was very interesting to read. I went in not knowing what it was really about, and I was immediately hooked by the stream of consciousness/unhinged but interesting writing style. I love this kind of writing. It reminded me of Imogen Binnie and Melissa Broder. This book centred a lot around themes of connection, and what it means to be human and to be in a body. Even though the characters and their decisions were unhinged and not necessarily likeable, they felt authentic and certain aspects of them felt relatable. I did find at times I wasn’t reaching for this, but overall I really enjoyed this and the writing style. I will definitely be reading more by Miranda July.
