How to Think More About Sex by Alain de Botton

5.0

I don't entirely agree with everything in this book, but nevertheless, I found it to have some lovely and gracious insights on belonging, vulnerability, fidelity, and eroticism. It is almost bleak at times, but I really think that one of the main strengths of the book, and of de Botton as a philosopher - the ability to take a very honest and blunt look at things, sometimes sad or harsh truths, and then to demonstrate that by understanding and opening ourselves up to these realities we can better face them and adjust our perspective for the good and pleasurable in life. It is freeing, in a way, to first get uncomfortable with what might be seen as a cynical perspective or assessment but then to weave that into a greater narrative of hope, freedom and the pursuit of happiness.
