Furies of Calderon
by Jim Butcher
First read June, 2005.
Initially rated a 4, but officially upgraded to a 5 star rating on my first reread. To set up a new set of characters and world so satisfyingly, action scenes which I couldn't help but race through its just a smaller reminder of how this series always captured my imagination.

13 years after first reading this series I still love it. Jim Butcher has this ability to capture my imagination with his characters and world building and this series is no exception. A much more sober tone of voice than the Harry Dresden series, and much more fitting to an epic fantasy series. There's much less humour present in the writing and we're thrown literally into the middle of events, it's a bit jarring to first get into but flows quickly soon after.
Tavi is the epitome of your classic young farmer boy growing up in obscurity who suddenly ends up saving the country, it's hard to appreciate him in this first novel but I enjoyed jumping back where it all kicked off.
