The prose at the beginning of the book was a bit shaky, but as it went on it became truly gripping. The magic system was fascinating, and I appreciated the socio-political parallels with European colonisation of Africa and the Americas, which were fairly well done and difficult to ignore. I also liked that the
romantic aspect
didn't overtake the central point of colonial dynamics, and that the ending didn't
turn Sciona into some kind of white saviour.
