Astonishing X-Men, Volume 2: Dangerous
by Joss Whedon
Another great installment from Whedon and Cassaday. It's interesting to me because, since I've been really interested in comics, Astonishing has definitely been a "side title" for the X-Men, with Uncanny as the flagship. It's cool to see a different title getting the best treatment.
Anyway, this brings up an awesome new challenge for the team, one that I knew about and that impacts current comics but I totally didn't realize I'd actually get to read. Plus we go back to Genosha in a big way and there's some more stuff that makes Xavier out to be a jerk - which I'm always a big fan of.
The characters are still witty, had several moments with Kitty that really made me chuckle out loud, and heartfelt and real. It's just very well written and there's an overarching story that is going to have a twist ending, I'm sure, that I can't wait for.
It's just such a well-crafted, classic type story that gives you bits and pieces while it builds to something that is so much more. I'm really excited to get to Volumes 3 and 4 to finish out this arc.
I took off a star for the art. While not really an issue, I'm still just not diggin Cassaday's style entirely. It's not bad by any means, but there are things he does that mess with faces and just don't look as good as they should. It's my opinion that every book should look flawless. Not iconic or trendsetting or unique, but having people's eyes and limbs out of place or ridiculous proportions that are flat out mistakes is just unacceptable, no matter how decent the overall look is.
