It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini

This is a very important book… In high school, I picked up this book in one of my teachers classroom libraries and I tried reading it and I had a hard time understanding it. I think I struggled with the author not specifically stating who was talking. So I gave up on it and put it back. In my YA class, I just got assigned an assignment where I had to pick a YA book that has a movie and write about the differences between the text and film with some research. I made a post and a few people recommended this book, so I thought I would give it a shot.

Recently this year I lost a member to suicide and had a very hard time coping while dealing with the pressure of college, so this book helped me with some questions I had. I love that it highlights the pressure of school. As a college student who is about to be graduating I can confidently say that school is rough. I have always had the constant voice in my head that says you are not smart enough to be here and that’s something I could relate to the main character with. As a future teacher, I am glad I get to come across books like these that I know will help my future students process their feelings, and it also reminds me that school needs to be more fun and less stress. I will always let my students know that they are loved and worthy because everyone deserves to be here on this earth :)
