One thing that always shocks me about Akwaeke Emezi's work is how variable it is.
This was a really gripping read, and I found it even more tense than Freshwater which I read last year. For that reason I was hooked and finished it pretty fast.
However, I did find the book pretty over-written... lots of awkward turns of phrase such as "it sounded like a church had spat all over her face"... "his eyes eating in her face"... everyone growled or snarled, particularly in the cringeworthy sex scenes. I wonder what possessed the author to write like this... were they reading too many Booktok dark romances or something?
