Bad Boys Do
by Victoria Dahl
Bad Boys Do is the second book in the Donovan Brothers Brewery series. We met Jaime, the younger brother and trouble maker, in the first book.
I liked Bad Boys Do much better than the first book in the series. Jaime is a great character who is interesting and has many layers. There is more to him beneath the surface but it is not something that he shows to the world. When Jaime and Olivia started hooking up, I wondered if the age difference would be an issue. There were many times throughout the book that I would forget that Jaime is 6 years younger than Olivia. At times, he acted more mature than Olivia.
I felt the overall plot was good and it kept me engaged. There were some moments that irked me. Olivia was annoying at times with her constantly saying that her relationship with Jaime is only for fun. She justified her behavior by saying that they were both using each other but I felt that the using was one-sided; Olivia was using Jaime. I didn't feel that Jaime was using her. Olivia was at her best when she was interacting with her friend, Gwen and when she would have her guard down with Jaime.
Jaime's older brother, Eric, was beyond awful in this book. He was a condescending asshat. Eric's book is next and I'm not sure if I will be able to like him. He has to make a grand gesture to be redeemable in my eyes. Tessa, the baby sister, makes an appearance in this book and she was annoying as ever. It reminded me why I didn't like the first book as much as I wanted to.
Bad Boys Do was heavier emotionally than I expected. Jaime has serious issues that stem from his parents' death and he needs to work through them. I liked that Jaime and Olivia didn't immediately say the "L" word but this being a contemporary romance, the phrase was tossed around. But it wasn't done frivolously. Both of them are still getting their feet wet in the relationship. The book wasn't all seriousness and gloom. There was some sexy time and Jaime did deliver with the sexiness for sure. I did have an issue with one particular sex scene that involved a hot tub and a condom. I didn't think a condom would be as effective if used in water. Latex + Hot Tub = Good idea? But I do appreciate that they practiced safe sex, even if it was in hot water.
I was hoping for a light-hearted read and it was in some parts. Bad Boys Do was a good addition to the series and my favorite of the series so far.
