We Could Fly by Rhiannon Giddens

5.0

I received a copy of We Could Fly by Rhiannon Giddens and illustrated by Briana Mukodiri Uchendu from Candlewick Press in exchange for an honest review.

We Could Fly is truly one of the most beautifully illustrated picture books that I have ever read and it holds such a beautiful and deep story within its pages. A young girl and her mother are featured in this picture book as the young girl tells her mother that she feels a tingle in her as she watches a sparrow fly. Her mother tells her that her grandmother had felt this same sensation as one that could free one from the bonds of earth. As the young girl embraces and embodies the history that lies within her legacy, she is able to take herself and her mother up into the air to fly free of what holds them down.

As one reads through the author's notes at the end to where the inspiration of We Could Fly comes from, you would feel inspired by its origin. The story is about love, resilience, and the long-held tradition of telling stories from one generation to the next in order to pass along history, tradition, memories and a key to freedom.
