This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith
5.0

When small town girl Ellie O’Niell receives an email meant for someone else, she never imagines that it could be the start of a witty flirtation. Graham Larkin might very well be the most well known teenage heartthrob out there, but he is smitten with Ellie from their first email exchange. From opposite sides of the country the two teens strike up a sweet rapport, discussing everything except their identities. When Graham finds out that Ellie’s small Maine hometown will make the perfect location for his latest film, he decides to take their relationship to the next level, but will Ellie ever find a way to live in the media’s spotlight?

This book is all sorts of cute. I’ve been eagerly looking for a sweet young adult romance in the same vein as Stephanie Perkins, and THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE was just what the doctor ordered. It is quirky and fun, with a swoon-worthy romance and wonderful sense of setting.

You might be thinking that the famous movie star falls for small town girl thing has been done to death, but this book gives it new life with fresh, witty dialogue and two main characters that you cannot help by root for from page one. I was hooked from their very first email exchanges, full of banter both profound and fun. I was just dying for the two of them to meet in person, and the little mix-up on the way to that meeting was so much fun.

I loved the quiet beach town setting of this book so much and felt transported to a summer in Maine immediately. I liked that the book was focused on the relationship of Ellie and Graham and not so much on the film aspect, and loved getting to know these two characters. Both of them have a compelling backstory that is central to the main conflict, and I just cringed when things went bad for them.

Chock full of witty dialogue and the most adorable meet-cute ever, readers are sure to fall in love with Ellie and Graham.
