Secondborn by Amy A. Bartol
5.0

So I started reading this out of a "huh, what's this book I have in my kindle library" and ended up bingeing it in one night. I really enjoyed this book. The world building convinced me that our protaganist really could be as awesome as she was - elite trained since birth to fight, specifically by someone who wanted to protect her in the future? Makes sense - and I found the Firstborn/Secondborn thing convincing as well. That said with so many secondborns dying - from the trials which are mostly glossed over in this book but are clearly worse than the Hunger Games for exploitation and Death of the underclass to the current war- I'd think there'd be more problems with population.

That didn't occur to me while I was actually reading it, and I know people feel a bit jaded of the "Badass teenager fights a dystopian system" but... this one is worth it.
