I am so close to giving it 5 stars. It's so much better than it had any right to be. I like that in this book Martha begins to wrestle with her desire to the the 'common' tasks like cooking, harvesting, etc with the expectations of being the laird's daughter. She's someone who is genuinely happy to forgo her luxuries and privileges but doesn't want to disappoint her parents. I also love the governess storyline.

What an excellent historical fiction novel for a middle-grade audience.
