ok well. ramble-y review incoming. i wish i could be one of the cool goodreads reviewers and write something eloquent and coherent, but i can't, so i'm just going to ramble!
i loved the first 3 books. they were fun, refreshing, wholesome (yet dark at times), and I loved the characters. but the last half of book 3 changed things, and i knew book 4 would really ramp up the stakes and the emotion, and i was right. i loved this book right away. the first 3 books really showed sophie's relationships with each character, but in this book, they were truly all a team. i absolutely loved all of the dynamics between the friends and their mentors, and grew so attached to all of them.
firstly, let me just say that sophie is such an amazing main character. in a lot of ways, she's similar to any other ya/middle grade protagonist. she's the chosen one, the special one, etc, but sophie foster is THE most loving, empathetic, selfless main character and i literally wish she was my friend. no matter what is going wrong, you can always be sure sophie is going to be right there with you, whether it's to help or just to sit with you so you're not alone.
and then...keefe. keefe keefe keefe KEEFE. he's been my favorite character from the second we met him in book 1. i knew we'd really explore his character in this book, and i knew it'd be emotional, but i was not prepared. he is easily one of my favorite characters i've ever read about, and i cried so much for him while reading this. i wish i could say more without it just being full on spoilers, but ugh. KEEFE!!!!!!
and sokeefe. yeah. i've never been on the fence with what team i'm on. i don't hate fitz (yet?? idk what's going to happen in future books), but why on earth would i choose anyone over KEEFE?! sokeefe are the most wholesome duo in the world. again i don't want to spoil anything so i'll just say the WINDOWS. i cried full tears over those scenes.
lastly, the PLOT. to be honest, i've always been a little confused about the plot while reading these books, but i'm starting to think i'm not stupid, and that the POINT was for me to be confused lol. because now, i feel like i have much more of a grasp on what's going on, and i'm STRESSED. when i say i cried so much while reading this book, i mean it. if you don't know me irl, you probably don't know that i am a crybaby pisces in general. i get misty-eyed at pretty much every book i read. if a rom com has a reallyyy cute scene, i'll probably get teary. but i was like fully sobbing at multiple points during this book and had to stop to collect myself, ESPECIALLY THE LAST 50-ISH PAGES IT WAS JUST HIT AFTER HIT AFTER HIT I'M SO EXHAUSTED AND EMOTIONALLY DRAINED LIKE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
anyways! as sad as i am that my copy of lodestar isn't getting here until thursday, i know i need to take a little break. i learned from bingeing other series that it's not the best idea, so i'll be reading cute romances this week that will not shatter my heart like this did. i think this is one of my favorite books ever, honestly. ok im done. i think. sokeefe i'll see you thursday.
*edit* I FORGOT ONE MORE THING. HOW DID I FORGET. the plot twist (well one of them) of..Someone..yeah. i CALLED IT!!!! and i felt kind of insane for that prediction because it didn't seem realistic and then BAM! i'm a genius. ok im done.
