Fantastic memoir in free verse (and the occasional haiku). Read this out loud to my 8 yr old daughter over the course of a month or two and we both enjoyed it tremendously. It sparked great conversations about race, civil rights, kids' feelings, self discovery. Can't recommend this highly enough.
