Breaking Damian by Eren Morgul
4.0

Damian lives in a city that is ruled by magic, but not everyone is a weaver (has magical abilities). There are four different houses with separate abilities and the emperor is the only one that can use all four abilities. Damian is a street kid, steals food from merchants, and has spent his entire life wanting to be a weaver. One day he finally shows signs of being a weaver, but finds that a civil war is starting between the four houses. With the emperor missing, Damian needs to find a way to stop his city from being destroyed.

This is the first book in The Fallen Emperor series. The beginning had me hooked and intrigued, the middle became slow, and it picked back up near the end. Some of the character interactions felt a little forced, and I wish that instead of having Damian's thoughts about wanting to be with someone, it was shown through his actions instead. Two of the houses and their abilities are explained near the beginning, but the other two aren't fully introduced or explained until over half way through the book. I would've like to have understood them a little more and a little sooner.

Now for the positives...Eren Morgul did a great job with the world building and I didn't have a problem imagining the surroundings no matter where they were. I could imagine the busy street full of merchant stalls as easy as the Crystal Palace and gardens. The last 20% of the book was filled with so many twists which can get overwhelming, but Eren executed them wonderfully.

Overall, I think this is a good start to a new series and I would read the next book. Even though Damian is about 16 years old, I think middle grade readers would enjoy the book.

Thank you to Eren Morgul for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.
