Good Dog, McTavish by Meg Rosoff

3.0

I thought [b:Good Dog McTavish|34840478|Good Dog McTavish|Meg Rosoff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1491934997l/34840478._SY75_.jpg|56072112] was a picture book when I first came across it online. In fact, it's a slim chapter book, although I wouldn't categorize it as a beginner chapter book due to the advanced vocabulary (it's an 850 Lexile).

Meg Rosoff definitely took inspiration from Roald Dahl and David Walliams. That quirky British absurdity. It can be charming when excellently executed. I think it was for the most part, though the pacing was a little off: spent too much time setting the stage, not enough in the thick of things.

McTavish, the clever pound dog who adopts the dysfunctional Peachey family, is endearing. I wish he had more of a distinct 'voice' when the narrative came from his POV.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and might continue the series if I have the chance.
