I strongly disagree with people who say this feels like if Colleen Hoover did a period piece, but I can see the tenuous threads they wove that argument out of. However, if you think CoHo invented stories about flawed women who don't necessarily realize how they are flawed then you need to read books that aren't written by Colleen Hoover! This is a great place to start! It's a story about coming to terms with how trauma changes you, if CoHo wrote it, we would have known that Rye was married the whole time but it would be "okay" by the end cuz she died or some shit
