Firebirds: An Anthology of Original Fantasy and Science Fiction
by Sharyn November
Good collection of fantasy short stories. Even though I don't normally like anthologies, I picked this up because it had a Staff Recommends card at my local bookstore (shoutout to Brookline Booksmith).
The story that stuck with me most was The Baby in the Night Deposit Box by Megan Whalen Turner, which is about precisely what you think. A bank advertises "your treasure will be safe with us" and when a baby appears in the deposit box, the bank owner refuses to turn her over to CPS, arguing that she will be cared for perfectly well in the bank. And young Penny (as the baby is named) does seem quite happy, and goes into crying fits when she's forced to leave. This tale was so delightful and had a very satisfying ending.
Other favorites were:
Flotsam by Nina Kiriki Hoffman: Becky discovers a child from another world, takes him home, and it's so wonderful to see him question things we take for granted.
The Flying Woman by Laurel Winter: Now I mostly loved the magic system in this — Dannilla can sense pockets of magic in the air, but is unable to use it. Her brother Raff can use the magic but not sense it. So only by working together, they can do magic.
