Afterlife by Julia Alvarez
5.0

I remember my first foray into books about the Dominican Republic was with Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies. How nice it was to revisit this author and once again be placed in the middle of four sisters exploring themes of loss and grief, change, powerful men and unfair legal systems and now faced with acculturation and physical distance between sisters.

I was afraid that the grief expressed in the summary would be too much for this time in my life, but instead i found it refreshing. An accurate look at the ups and downs and process of integrating grief and what we owe our communities in the meanwhile. Alvarez explores what it means to be an elder in the community with the simultaneous push and pull of whose needs matter most and the boundaries are inconsistent.

I hope that you chose to pick up this book. I love Alvarez's storytelling. She will make sure that you don't travel this road alone.
