I get really tired of women’s reviews where they say they didn’t like the main female character because of silly things - she didn’t forgive the mmc fast enough, she wasn’t the perfect friend/sister/employee/whatever… and it’s usually just internalized misogyny. However….
Nesta is a horrible person. She was horribly selfish at the very beginning of book 1, she was horribly mean before her trauma, she was horrible during her trauma, and she’s horrible and cruel to the people who love her the most throughout this book. She hurts them where she knows it will count. I know this is her redemption arc, but I’m not enjoying reading about all the ways she can be cruel to her sisters, who are angels for not telling Nesta to STFU every time she says something unbearably hurtful. Nesta doesn’t just cross the line, she lives on the other side of it and never apologizes. So I’m 1/3 of the way through a 700+ page book, and I’m so sick of her shit I don’t really want to read any more. I’m seriously considering skipping all the stuff about her and just reading the stuff about the possible pending war.
Update: so I finished it. Nesta is still pretty awful to her sisters and people who cared about her before her trauma until nearly the end of the book. She heals, (this is not a spoiler, it’s a redemption story so we knew it was coming) she gets nicer, and everything is roses again. But it was miserable for me to read.
