Arabella is my third-favorite Georgette Heyer, but only by a very thin margin, and that primarily because the age difference between Arabella and Robert Beaumaris is just enough to make me a smidgin uncomfortable. But like my top two favorite heroines (Fredericka and Sophy), Arabella is spirited and independent. And like Fredericka and The Grand Sophy, Arabella absolutely sparkles with Heyer's characteristic wit - if for nothing else, you should read it for the conversations between Beaumaris and his lowborn companion dog, Ulysses. It's simply a perfectly crafted, delightful romance that delights on many levels, not the least of which is the sly fun Heyer pokes at the manners and world of the haut ton.
