A Murder of Crows by Sarah Yarwood-Lovett

3.0

A small town murder mystery with a limited suspect pool. Dr. Nell Ward, an ecologist doing bat surveys is dragged into a murder investigation by virtue of being present at the scene of a crime. Every single piece of evidence that surfaces points to her and yet the reader knows for sure that she isn't guilty. It was not too hard to guess who the murderer would turn out to be, but pieces of how the murderer stitched the crime together are hard to guess.

A couple of things that made me dislike the main character.

1. Trying too hard to be the hero. Of course, there's no place for her as a protagonist in the story if she isn't but it didn't feel completely natural.
2. From not having any romantic entanglements (due to her past) to having two to choose from - it all feels a bit over-the-top in terms of storytelling.

I did like the excruciating detail that the writer went to regarding the details of bat habitats and other things (clearly evident all those parts went over my head!), owing to the author's own professional experience. It does lend a certain degree of authenticity to the book.

But despite these flaws (slightly predictable plot and forced tropes), the writing was decent and made me want to read on further to find out why.
