My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine

Did not finish book. Stopped at 75%.
funny lighthearted slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
Rating 2.5/5 because it did have some mildly redeeming qualities I guess. Stopped at 75% and quickly skim read the rest to get it over with.

I really wanted to like this book. I had high hopes of it being a fun, fluffy and perhaps a little bit of a cheesy read but it was none of those things. It fell so severely flat and was disappointing to say the least.

The characters have no depth to them and are rather two dimensional. Sam was seemingly hemmed in as an afterthought in order to be inclusive, Cassie is a self absorbed snooze fest with the personality of a teaspoon, and aside from Fredericks letters to Cassie and texts to Bernard he was… Well he just was.

Cassie honestly comes off as a “I’m not like the other girls” and “pick me bitch” type and as far her “art” goes, I’ll just quote the vamp himself:

“I suspect I am a rather hopeless case when it’s comes to modern art”.

In regard to the one and only sex scene… Where’s the spice ma’am?! I’ve felt more heat coming from a lukewarm chicken korma than whatever the heck that was. If you’re going to write about monster fucking then at least zest it up a little, give it a bit more bite, and make it worth our time getting to it. He’s been around long enough, surely he has a few more tricks up his sleeve.

Overall I didn’t enjoy very much of this book despite a few funny rom-commy moments amidst all the awkward.
