On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

5.0

Angie Thomas' second novel, On the Come Up, is the story of Bri Jackson in the familiar setting of Garden Heights, that is, if you've also read her debut novel The Hate U Give (you should), which I reviewed in summer 2020.

Bri attends Midtown which is a school centered in the arts and a place where she has a better chance at succeeding from. But all Bri wants to do is rap like her father, who was killed when she was little.

After her first rap battle in the legendary Ring, she thinks she can make it rapping and solve her family's issues. It seems like Bri takes one step forward toward her dream and three steps backward from who she is or what she's trying to do.

On the Come Up is filled with a host of snappy and real characters who you'll fall in love with, no matter how many "mistakes" they may make. It's raw and eye opening into the lives of Black people but throughout all of the unfair hardships is an undercurrent of constant hope.

Fair warning: this book ends on such an open ended cliff hanger, you'll be watching for when the sequel drops. It was written in 2019 so fingers crossed it's soon! I just want more excellent work from Angie Thomas!
