You know what I love? I love when a book takes you by surprise. This was that book. WOW! This isn't my typical kind of read either; I usually read romance or thrillers.

It is the summer of 1969 and Lucas Painter is 14 years old. School is about to end and Lucas is looking forward to summer break with his best friend, Connor. His brother is in the Vietnam War and his parents are fighting all the time. To help him "escape," Lucas runs. On one of his runs, he sees some dogs and starts running with them (he would love a dog, but his mom won't let him have one). On one of his runs, he sees a cabin in the woods and peers inside to find an older lady lying on the bed. He tries knocking to see if the dogs are hers, but she doesn't wake up. He calls the police and come to find out that the lady overdosed and that he saved her life. After that, Lucas strikes up a friendship with the woman, who has been battling her own demons. He introduces Connor to her, thinking she can help him with his depression. During all of this, his brother comes home from the war and is battling demons of his own.

This was a true coming of age story. I LOVED Lucas! He was such a sweet character. He is one of my all time favorite book characters, that is how much I loved him. This was a very powerful story!
