My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones
5.0
**DEC 23 UPDATE: I kept hearing so much hype over this book that I decided to do a Reddit deep dive then try reading again. I’m SO glad I did. Better understanding the ending made this book so much better for me. I’m bumping my rating up to a 4.5/4.75. Not a full 5 because the ending really was so busy that I had a hard time following without the Reddit deep dive.
ORIGINAL RATING (July 2023):
I did a mix of audiobook & kindle reading for this one because the dialogue was so incredibly all over the place it was really difficult to track.
MC Jade is definitely a character that you sympathize with. She certainly has gone through a number of stressors and traumas. My heart really broke for her through the entire story. Although, the writing style is just not for me. It felt like an attempt at Fight Club style stream of consciousness, but it came out as disjointed and repetitive. I think the author threw in the horror references to emphasize on Jade’s obsessive behavior, but it truly was so. over. the. top…it ended up taking away so much of the story. If I never hear the term “final girl” again, I’ll be a happy camper.
60% through I was audibly groaning as to how I was going to finish this one. The story doesn’t pick up until the very end. The last 20% or so was fairly entertaining, fast paced, but the ending…what.
A solid 2/5 for a unique story that tied Native American culture into westernized horror. That was pretty cool, but I felt like this could have been much more embellished on and used to the authors benefit. I think I’ll have to pass on more SGJ books.
