A tragic tale of lost inheritance that spent a lot of time in dark places, with betrayals, scheming, and bad luck threatening to keep our heroine in a life of despair and destitution forever - but such an enjoyable read. Each character was so richly believable, so three-dimensionally presented, that I adored reading about them no matter what their schemes, even smiles-as-she-sticks-a-hatpin-in-your-eye Ms LeCount.

I love epistolary novels, so the use of letters and missives as entr'actes was very enjoyable. I also really enjoyed our detailed visits to a variety of settings in England and Scotland, and the tangled and long (but easily followed) threads of family history that were slowly revealed.
