Mighty Quill
by Emmaline Strange
“Lucy,” I said, all serious. “I think I might be bi.”
She stared at me, expectant. The silence stretched on for a long ass time before she finally squinted and said, “Okay, and?”
I sputtered. “Good grief, isn’t that enough?”
“Oh, sorry,” she said, schooling her face into a look of cartoonish surprise. “Egads! You are a bisexual! We must tell the church.”

“Don’t be so dramatic.”
“That’s rich, coming from the guy who spent forty-eight hours as a hedgehog because he was a little embarrassed.”

During a lull in the conversation, he caught my eye and missed his mouth with his fork, stabbing himself. “Ow,” he said softly, blushing. Yes. I loved him.

June 2023. 3.5 rounded up. I’ve read two novels on Kindle Unlimited by Emmaline Strange recently, both are urban paranormal gay romances with a mystery at the center (world has shifters and vampires most humans don’t know about).
I liked them but they both had some pacing issues. The author struggles to balance the mystery element with the romance element effectively and it effects the flow and tone of the story at times.
The relationships are sweet, there’s lots of humor, the world-building is good, the main characters are likable, steamy scenes are well-done. I’d definitely read more by the author if I can get it from Kindle Unlimited or the library.
They work as standalones but there are return characters so reading in order is preferable.
“A Mighty Quill” by Emmaline Strange. Book 1 in the series “Sanguis et Fauna.”
