I really loved the first half of this book. I’m all about mean rich boys with a penchant for cruelty and bad girls who can’t say no to them no matter how cruel, and I ate that shizz up. That sounds bad, but it just works for a certain type of story. Summer is broken and lonely and wild, Whit is wealthy and bored and mad. The darkness in him calls to the similar darkness in her. It’s like if Chuck Bass got together with Serena rather than Blair in some ways. All great so far, but then halfway through the chinks start appearing.

Sure Whit has poor little rich boy problems, but you never quite get to the root of his “damage”, and he comes off as too dark for no good reason. Which is still okay since I’m all about the dark. Summer on the other hand has more issues than Vogue, and we learn about them all. So as infuriating as she can be, and as much as she acts out, I always kind of understood where she was coming from. The frustration however, comes from the fact that all through this thiccc book, these two never learn to really communicate. Oh their physical communication is fine; it’s rough, depraved, and hot hot hot, as those are two h0rny kids. The scenes get steamier and their chemistry gets wilder, but you never feel a true emotional connection between them. The journal thing is left mostly unresolved. I was pleased that she gives herself some time and space but you don’t see the growth, just told that Whit is now nicer to her and sweeter and ready to settle down. For a girl who’s been knocked down constantly by life, it seems somehow not enough, even if I do get the psychology behind her behaviors. I mean, where’s the grovel?
