When We Are Kind by Monique Gray Smith

5.0

This book centers around the conversation of raising kind children – the book discusses all of the different ways a child can be kind. The book is written from an indigenous perspective (Diné, specifically) and includes numerous examples of traditional knowledge in the illustrations. The bilingual version of the book (there is also a French version and an English-only version) is a thrilling example of indigenous language revitalization projects and children's’ books merging. Being kind has several meanings.

Diné bilingual books are the future! I think that indigenous language books are going to really start growing and entering the market more frequently, and this is just one example. I was truly honored to have found this book – and hope that more like it fill the shelves soon! I think it has great representation for Diné children and communities. The Diné bilingual edition of this book should be the only one on shelves (I’m not sure why there is an English-only version out there).
