I find murder mysteries easiest to read in French. The text tends to be logical, not open to interpretation or flights of fancy, metaphor it other lyrical devices. So translation is easier.
This was slow in the regard as Vargas is an expansive writer, bringing feeling to the narrative. And it works. I was transported to 90s Paris. Unfortunately, I've returned to the here and now
