Pure imagination fuel, overflowing with creative worldbuilding. I was surprised by just how unpredictable the first half or so of the book felt. Letters between the two main characters make up the emotional bulk of the story and are, mostly, beautifully written. I didn't expect the words of a cyborg time-assassin to so deeply move me about what it means to love and be loved. My single gripe is that dialogue between the two protags gets a little indistinguishable when the Marvel-style quips come out; it's hard to completely suspend disbelief about how their tones change. I felt proud to predict the
twist about the seeker,
but maybe that was foreshadowed more than I'll admit.
