Finally read this! Just as when I read Frankenstein earlier this year, it was fun to note the things that don't really make their way into the popular, simplified retellings-- the parade of ghosts outside the window, the bizarre and unsettling appearance of the ghost of Christmas past. . . in fact just all the ghosts, in general, are much stranger in the book than you see represented elsewhere.
And Tiny Tim? There's nothing assuring us he lives any longer in "our" timeline. It's entirely possible he just has a slightly more pleasant, but still short, life.
And speaking of short, this story is not nearly as long as you might guess from picking up a hard copy. Every edition I've come across is padded with extras of some sort. I don't wanna say it's filler, but it does seem to be in keeping with Dickens' spirit to find a way to charge a novel-sized price for a novella-sized story.
Anyway, it's hard to find anything new and interesting to say about a 150-year-old classic and I'm not about to try here. It's the perfect book to read over the night or two before Christmas and that's exactly what I enjoyed doing!
