balletbookworm 's review for:
North and South
by Elizabeth Gaskell
While I don't have much to add to any reviews of Gaskell's novel of the Industrial North - beyond it has a very nice love story and Mrs. Thornton is a great character - I do wonder if the "social novel" got a little lost in the love story. Because the workers start to fade into the background the more Margaret starts to fall in love with John.
But it is a very nice piece of Victorian literature (and without all of Dickens's prating flat characters).
