I am the only woman there by Bertien van Manen

4.0

Photos of first generation migrant women in the Netherlands in the ‘70s. The portraits are taken at home, at their work and at community gatherings. About halfway through the book, two devastating personal stories appear - of a migrant’s daughter and a wife of a labor migrant. After reading these, you see the photos with different eyes. It’s revealing how your perception can change and it shows the importance of telling the stories of unheard groups.
