THE VEGETARIAN by HAN KANG

What the hell did I just read and why the hell did I love it so much?

Set in Korea. Written by a Korean. #koreanmarch

A woman decides to go vegetarian one day after having a dream, but her husband, who narrates the first part of the novel, is not keen on this and feels his wife is not performing her wifely duties by refusing to cook him meat (heaven forbid he cook for himself!). It’s fair to say this is a very patriarchal society and when the woman’s father finds out that she won’t eat meat, he is less than pleased. In fact, the whole family apologises to her husband for his wife’s behaviour. Cultural differences may well baffle you when you pick this one up. But the writer is fully aware of how ridiculous these patriarchal rules are and she confronts that throughout the novel.

It was strange, yet beautiful. Visceral, graphic, haunting. Not for the faint of heart. But again, I bloody loved it.

What did you think of this?
