Tia Isa Wants a Car by Meg Medina

4.0

Summary: This story is about a girl that wants to help her aunt save and purchase a car. The purpose of the car is to take the family to the beach. The girl surprises her aunt with the money she saved up from doing various small jobs for people around her town.

Evaluation: This story incorporated Spanish words throughout it. For example, Tia means Aunt. I think it is important for different languages to be a part of classroom readings. Seeing the different jobs that the girl came up with to save money was interesting and kept me wondering what else she would do.

Teaching Idea: I would use this story to teach about economics and the importance of saving money for goods that you want to buy. I would have the students think about something they would like to have and brainstorm ways that they could save money for that item. This could also integrate math as students add up the money they would save in different ways.
