The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I was more than ready to be disappointed with how much of this volume was a flashback to before Xie Lian’s first fall. I wanted to be in the here-and-now with Hua Cheng’s not so subtle flirting, not see glimpse of a young child following an adult god. I think I was wrong for that.

Despite knowing that the flashback would most like end with the collapse of Xianle and Xie Lian’s first fall, I was gripped with his choices and their consequences. It’s easy to see how Xie Lian was once revered when you see how kind he is, but it would be impossible to believe that he is hated when you see he was even kinder in the past. He is so full of good intentions at his own expense that every time an insult is even insinuated my heart aches.

There are still so many mysteries left to be explored from that time, that I now find myself biting my fingernails hoping to get even more flashback in future volumes. I have so many theories and need answers!

After the flash back is a section of fun pallet cleansers, shenanigans and maybe even a little romance, I won’t even begin to spoil the fun in that section. The only thing I’ll say is Shi Qingxuan is definitely my favorite character who isn’t Hua Cheng.

I’m looking forward to Volume 4 and regret promising my brother that I’d read the Great Hunt after a select few books from my TBR list. It will sadly probably be a month at least before I can come back to this series.
