ajtye 's review for:
Blood Meridian
by Cormac McCarthy
All can bear witness to the year that it has taken me to read Blood Meridian and understand with no uncertainty that is the toughest book I have ever read. Word for word and sentence for sentence I don’t believe another book (save The Road) can match its exquisiteness.
At the time of its publication McCarthy was a man without an audience. A genius without success. His biblical writing here feels akin to a lone soothsayer measuring out a prophecy. Not a prophecy delivered with desperation but one calmly put to ink like an old epic poem whose primal rhythm feels carved from the dust of the Earth.
It’s brilliance is obvious. It’s enjoyment is questionable. I often loved reading it. I often loved thinking about it. Rarely did the two overlap.
