The Queens of Innis Lear
by Tessa Gratton
So this is a retelling of King Lear by Shakespeare. I remember reading this in secondary school for my final year exams but didn't remember the story all too well.
I really liked how the author writes. She captures and beautifully shows the world she is building. I loved her unique ideas she brought to this story. She makes a unique magic system, with the trees and earth being able to speak to those who train to listen. The idea of prophecy guided by the stars was a fun concept which I loved. I definitely agree this is a high fantasy novel!
The characters, as in King Lear, stood out for all different reasons. The author choose to keep to the original character personalities as much as she could. Which meant that my heart ached for Lear and for Elia. I ended up feeling a lot for Reagan, for her yerning for a child to her hatefulness of Lear. Gaela had her emotional moments too, but overall, I didnt like her very much. Lear of course was confused throughout the book and his banishment of Elia left him vulnerable.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The ending was written so well, it left me feeling love and hate for these characters that I learned to love and hate. It was such a heartbreaking ending and no one really won which was even sadder.
This book was beautifully written and richly described. The characters were beautifully done and kept to the retelling of King Lear as well as Tessa could.
