Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

4.0

As a bit of a rookie in the comic world, I find it difficult to judge what is good and what is bad - I can only talk about what I found enjoyable, so that is what I am going to do. In this first volume of Saga, we are introduced to Alana and Marko and their newborn child. The premise of the story is really exciting, it's basically a fantasy space opera with a forbidden-love story. Space located novels (and I guess it's the same case with comics) tend to hold on to science and stay away from magic; the closest to the fantasy genre they will go is inventing various alien species. In Saga, however, the fantasy world has been upscaled to space scale. We've got a planet and moon in war against each other, fighting out their battles on other planets so as not to damage their homes. I've just got to say, you had me at intergalactic war.

One thing that I absolutely love is the narrative perspective. The panels are narrated real time, but here and there, the real narrator of the story, Alana and Marko's daughter, will comment on what is happening. The two narrative perspectives complement each other really well as the daughter's retrospective narration explains things that might not have been obvious from the action in the panels but also provides a lot of foreshadowing.

Well, I'd really recommend reading Saga. It's entertaining and it's got a cool story. I think it's going to take another volume or two for me to really love this as this first one doesn't really go beyond setting everything up (which is my only problem really and the reason it's not getting 5 stars).
