This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab

4.0

It started off a little slow for me. While I appreciate that there isn't really an info dump, just crawling to figure out what is going on isn't better. I was pretty confused as to what was happening for about 200 pages. I wasn't really sure why there was a treaty or a war between two halves of a city, I wasn't sure what each "monster" was or how they really worked, and I wasn't really sure how August "ate" or what he was. After about half of the book was over, the "monster system" was cleared up and I understood more of what was going on, but I am still left a little confused on the city system and how the politics of the world works. I'm not really sure why the city is divided or how. Once the story ramped up, it was really fast paced and enjoyable. I gobbled it up. I thought it ended nicely with a pretty bow on top so I'm not entirely sure how Schwab is going to get a second book out of it. It almost feels like it's going to be the 2 main characters in a different storyline with new issues which kind of sullies the original book for me. It almost feels unnecessary? But, alas, I shall continue on.
