Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti

5.0

This is an absolute treasure of a poem!

I read it in order to see if I want to do research on it for a course in my PhD, and I’m almost completely sold on doing so. There is just so much to unpack in Rossetti’s words and so much symbolism that I feel like diving in and seeing where I come out.

Lizzie and Laura are like two sides of a coin and are tempted by the wicked goblin men to come and “eat their fruits.” One sister does and it’s up to the other sister to save her. It’s an insanely simple plot, but so complex in its undertaking that I could read this poem over and over and see something new each time.
