The Odd Woman and the City: A Memoir by Vivian Gornick
4.0
I loved this little gem of a book. It was the perfect companion during my recent stint of solo travelling, as I found it easy to dip in and out of Gornick's meandering style that catapults back and forth between the people she knows and the people she encounters on the streets of New York. I had to re-read several of the passages on companionship, friendship, loneliness and the different ways in which they intersect with feminism for the astounding moments of clarity they afforded. The central relationship that foregrounds the book, that between Gornick and her friend Leonard, is also endearing and amusing. I can't wait to read more of Gornick's work.
