Travels with Charley in Search of America
by John Steinbeck
Travels With Charley follows John Steinbeck and his dog Charley as they take a road trip across America. Steinbeck goes on this journey in the hopes of rediscovering the America that he’s been writing about for so long.
I read this book for my English class as part of my summer reading and I enjoyed it, and gave it 3.5/5 stars. This is the first book by John Steinbeck that I have read and I am excited to read more in school this year. The book was difficult to get into at first because of the dialect and the pace, but after a while it became more enjoyable to read.
I don't have much else to say about this novel, other than that I enjoyed seeing America from the point of view of John Steinbeck and seeing what America looked like in the 1960's. There were many points that I was able to compare America then to America now, and Steinbeck thought a lot about the consequences of many of America's decisions and views (especially those related to race and the climate) which are still debated today.
