I think it's important to read material that contrasts with your state of mind, so as to give an opportunity for growth, learning, and perspective. I picked up this book thinking it would fit the bill.
It just so happens that this is one of the best anthologies I've read. The way Bragg weaves stories together makes me homesick for a place I've neve been to and a people I've never met. There is a bittersweet sadness to his tales but there are also many laughs and nostalgic memories.
If ever I make my way to the Deep South, I will make sure to order a real grouper sandwich, scrunch my goes in the white sands of Fairhope, and watch for armadillos on the highway.
