Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman
2.0

Writing reviews directly after reading a book feels both like exactly what I should do and a mistake. My disappointment in the ending and basically the entire second half of the book is completely overwhelming whatever happiness and belief in Elio and Oliver’s love and future I held just a short while ago. My overall thought as I finished this book about 10 minutes ago, was “that shattered my heart and for what?” Caught up in it all you feel as though there’s a relationship between the two, and then you finish the flat and depressing ending and realize that they are in fact very 2D characters that you don’t actually learn that much about other than their infatuation with the other.

if the conclusion of the book came soon after Oliver’s original departure, even though the conclusion would be missing it would’ve been much better off for it. But the second half of the story is a continuous downward spiral into despair and questions that leave you disconcerted and anxious.

Essentially it was good and then it was bad, leaving me right in the middle.

this review puts it very well.
