The Vegetarian by Han Kang
4.0

Imo, The Vegetarian follows this rough structure:

Part 1 --> The Vegetarian rejects society + social role of womanhood and is shamed for it, treated awfully and even as insane, deep pressure, perhaps antisocial due to disgust with human society/capitalism/etc.

Part 2 --> Can art transcend this? Spoiler: No. Unable to depict love without the sexual coming into it and infecting it. Art offers no relief, not able to access form of love that transcends society (via the floral coitus).

Part 3 --> Romanticises care in some way through the figures of the mentally ill woman caring for the Vegetarian + the vegetarian's sister caring for her child, both as purpose, reason for living. Feels like a strange inversion because this embraces the feminine role and portrays it as a positive. Difference between serving other without giving your consent and freely giving love. Or perhaps that interpretation is too neat. Maybe it's just a paradox?

May update if class discussion changes my mind in some way.
